These articles cover both realism and formalism. I had trouble finding articles that cover just one of these topics as they are usually compared together. The second article is great as it depicts a scale between the two styles of film and how they differ.
The first article's description of realism states how these films try to depict "real life" as well as try to be audience-centered, in that they encourage the audience to develop personal interpretations of the film.

"Formalism and its Discontents" by Dana Polan.
- This article discusses some of the political aspects thought to be inherently tied to formalism during the style's early years. The author analyzes and criticizes Noel Burch, a renowned film critic of the mid to late 20th century, for his inconsistencies pertaining to formalism and realism.

These two articles describe both formalism and realism, compare them, and provide examples of each.

The first one describes both categories of film with examples like Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, M*A*S*H, and Easy Rider.

The second one recognizes pioneers in both schools, such as Andre Bazin, the Lumiere Brothers, and George Melies.

The article discusses how the filmmakers’ ability to realistically portray an event or story has changed over time. Directors can edit and change the backgrounds featured in their films. The modern technology used in films allows the director to portray their story in any background. For instance, they do not have to merely film on location, they can use green screens to make any set appear real, whether it’s outer space or a park.

This is not so much an article as it is a telling of realist conventions through the eyes of Andre Bazin, a film theorist and proponent of realism. It goes through traditional realism aesthetics, giving examples with stills from various films. It also touches on variances of realism, such as neorealism in Italy.
